A little known 'walking' area, the countryside around Llandovery is unspoilt and very pastoral. There are rolling hills, deep valleys, lakes, castles, waterfalls and large tracts of forest. The western edge of the Black Mountain or Carmarthen Fan is an easy drive from the town into the heart of this dramatic and wild area. Llandovery is situated on the "Heart of Wales" railway that runs from Swansea to Shrewsbury and this rail journey is one of the finest in Wales. It is certainly worth taking a trip on the line and stopping off at various points for walks or sightseeing. Whatever your level of fitness you will find, in these pages, walks to suit all abilities and tastes. It is not uncommon to have the walks entirely to yourself.
