42 walks/44 pages
The Isle of Anglesey Ynys Ma´n, is renowned for its stunning coastal scenery and maritime history. Most of the coastline falls within a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) covering nearly one third of Anglesey "the largest in Wales" and including Holyhead Mountain, Anglesey's highest point. In addition North Anglesey, Holyhead Mountain and Aberfraw Bay carry Heritage Coast status. The 42 linked circular walks in this NEW REVISED EDITION explore the beautiful diverse landscape of the AONB and its fascinating history.
The splendid coast includes cliffs, rocky headlands and coves, award-winning sandy beaches, sand dunes, small harbours, salt marshes, woodland, heathland and a hinterland containing several low hills offering panoramic views. This landscape provides a rich habitat for wildlife, including cliff nesting sites for seabirds, sea caves for choughs and woodland for the endangered red squirrel.
For centuries the seas around Anglesey have been a hazard to shipping, resulting in many shipwrecks and establishing the reputation of the island's lifeboatmen for their bravery.
The walks include the best sections of the Coastal Path and the island's high viewpoints. They pass lighthouses and beacons installed in the 19thC to help protect shipping. They feature old telegraph stations, ancient churches, impressive Neolithic burial chambers, Iron Age hillforts, old brickworks, Holy Wells, a country park and historic communities. Also included is Parys Mountain, once the world's major source of copper and the nearby historic port of Amlwch.
The routes, which range from a 2¼ mile Copper Mine Trail to a 10½ mile exploration of Holy Island, are well within the capability of most people. Many routes contain shorter walk options. A key feature is that individual walks can easily be linked with others to provide longer and more challenging day walks if required. They follow public rights of way or permissive paths, and cross Open Access land.
Each walk has a detailed map and description which enables the route to be followed without difficulty. The location of each walk is shown on the back cover and a summary of the key features of each is provided. This book contains all the information you need to explore the coastline of this beautiful island.
