David Perrott trained as a graphic designer and worked on the renowned Nicholson Guides before going freelance in the early 1970s. He was also a visiting lecturer at University of London Goldsmiths College. In 1977 he moved with his wife Morag, an illustrator, to a cottage near Machynlleth in mid-Wales.

For many years David made regular visits to London,working freelance for various publishers, including Harper Collins, and the Consumers’ Association magazine ‘Holiday Which’ as their cartographer. He co-authored the Shell Book of the Islands of Britain, and took over the research and writing of the Nicholson/Ordnance Survey Waterways Guides series of seven books. He has produced maps for several well known guide books, including CAMRA’s Good Beer Guide and was the author of their ‘Best Pubs for Families’.

In 2004 he authored the Glyndwr’s Way National Trail Guide, now published by Kittiwake as ‘Glyndwr’s Way National Trail’.

Over 30 years ago he was invited to produce a book of walks around Machynlleth, something he considered a small favour at the time. It turned out to be surprisingly popular, and he was soon covering other areas of Wales. Over the years Kittiwake has commissioned a number of talented and dedicated authors to research and write books, and now has well over 90 titles in print, including around a dozen long-distance trails, covering most areas of Wales and the Borders.

David and Morag retired at the end of 2022, and the business is now in the capable hands of their son Ben.
